Kids’ Classes at CrossFit Hi-Def

The kids’ class at CrossFit Hi-Def is a half hour class Monday and Wednesday, at 4:30 P.M.  We do a wide variety of activities and sports that keep the kids moving and active. We run, row, squat, climb, jump, do pushups, pull-ups, sit-ups, gymnastics, obstacle courses…

The classes consist of a warm up, skill, work out, and game. The warm up lasts 5-10 minutes. We then work on a “skill” for 10 minutes or so. During this time the kids learn new things that challenge their coordination, balance, strength, and agility (for example hand stands or bar skills like pullovers). We then do a workout of the day or “WOD”. This consists of a few rounds of various skills or exercises repeated in a way that challenges their strength and endurance. The last thing we do is spend a few minutes playing a game. The older kids will often choose to play tag. When we happen to have a class of really little ones we sometimes play duck duck goose. We play “Burpee” says (like Simon Says only kids do a Burpee instead of getting out), or name games, or hide and seek with objects. We try to end class on a fun note so the kids want to come back. Not that the rest of the class isn’t fun, but the WOD should usually leave them a little tired.

The components and number of repetitions or rounds in the WODs is constantly varied. The idea is to challenge the kids the right amount and to also keep things fun and inclusive.  The variety also builds a balanced and well rounded fitness level while helping to keep the kids mentally engaged.

All of the exercises and skills are scaled to the individual child’s abilities.  For example, some children will be able to jump up to the 24” box when they begin.  Others, regardless of size or age, will start with heights much lower.  A 3 year old child will feel very proud to jump on and off of a 2” plate and we think this is fantastic.  It builds coordination and strength, but most importantly, self confidence and esteem.  Plus, it’s so darn fun (and cute).

Many kids think the CrossFit Hi-Def gym is pretty cool. There are bars and rings to hang on, balls, rowers, weights, boxes for jumping, and ropes for climbing.  There is also a really cool stack of tractor tires that makes the perfect fort or hiding spot.  The gym is small; and the people who work out here are friendly and outgoing. It’s just a nice atmosphere for the little ones.

If you would like to come and visit you are welcome any time. Kids can take a free class to see what it’s all about.  Parents are always welcome to stay and watch and are encouraged to ask questions any time.  Parents are also encouraged to participate in CrossFit.  Free introductions can be scheduled.  What better way to encourage your child to become fit than to lead by example?

Our kids’ classes are modeled after CrossFit Kids.  You can find more information about CrossFit Kids online.
