Tomorrow, Saturday, June 1 we are hosting a fundraiser for one of our athletes.
On June 1, 2013 CrossFit Hi-Def will be hosting a WOD to earn donations for the National Kidney Foundation and raise awareness for kidney disease. 26 million Americans live with kidney disease and 1 in 3 people are at risk for developing it. Diabetes and high blood pressure are the leading causes of chronic kidney disease. Once kidneys fail, the patient will need a transplant or dialysis to survive. Currently, there are 92,000 people awaiting a kidney transplant. More than 79 cents of every dollar raised for the NKF goes directly to support programs and services, including free early detection screenings, research support, education, patient services, and much more. The NKF is a nonprofit organization and is approved by major charity watchdog organizations like Charity Navigator. NKF also meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability with the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance, and is a BBB Wise Giving Seal Holder.
The “Johnny’s Warrior’s” WOD will be held in honor of John “Johnny” Bearden, our member Erin Babani’s uncle who lost his battle to kidney disease in February. Johnny lived with kidney disease for 34 miraculous years, surviving 4 kidney transplants and years of dialysis in between. The toll on his body was tremendous but his determination and zest for life pushed him through circumstances that would leave the rest of us in awe. He loved sports and wanted to play professionally but was sidelined by his illness. But he didn’t give up and earned his bachelor’s degree in sports science, going on to become an athletic trainer, staying connected to what he loved and helping others fulfill their athletic dreams. Just prior to his passing he was working toward his Master’s Degree, wanting to counsel others with special health concerns on how to improve the quality of their life.
All proceeds will be donated to the National Kidney Foundation as the research by this charity is the reason Johnny was able to live 20 years past his prognosis. There will be raffles for lots of great prizes!!!
Thank you again!!!
