On Saturday November 22, we are hosting WOD for a Cure. The goal is to raise awareness of Epilepsy. Epilepsy is a group of related disorders characterized by a tendency for recurrent seizures. Epilepsy makes every day activities difficult and dangerous for those who suffer. Our objective is raising awareness in hope to find a more effective treatment, so that everyone with Epilepsy can experience life to the fullest. This Fundraiser will include a challenging, intense, but most importantly fun WOD. Friends and Family are welcome to participate, and what is an event without FOOD! We will be having a Potluck for all our Paleo chefs out there.
The inspiration behind this event is the life of an amazing girl, Britney Dipley. Britney is the daughter of our athlete Christie and sister to our athlete Kayla. Her life quickly changed at age four when she started experiencing hundreds of seizures a day. She was told there was a possibility she would grow out of her seizures by the age of 9, but she has surpassed age nine is currently twenty three years old and still suffers with generalized and petite mal seizures a couple times a week. It is very unfortunate that approximately 30% of patients diagnosed with epilepsy are resistant to medications and are diagnosed as intractable epilepsy and Britney falls in this category. Through the years this has forced the Dipley family to make some pretty tough decisions. Britney has had a Vagus Nerve Stimulator implanted; at age 15, Brain Surgery to remove a partial of her left temporal lobe; at age 16, Deep Electrode Implantation Surgery; at age 19 where they were informed she was no longer a surgery candidate and has been on every medication on the market.
All proceeds will be donated to the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles.
